How does a heat pump work?

How does a heat pump work?

On the market today, there are several common heat pump technologies. They all work on the same principles, catching heat from one place, and moving it to another. The main differences are where the heat is extracted from, and in what setting/context they are most suitable. In this project I will focus on the air-to-air system.

The heat transfer in an air-to-air system is done by using a refrigerant fluid that runs through a closed loop system.

The refrigerant has a very low boiling point, and by changing the pressure of the refrigerant, it is possible to extract heat even from very cold temperatures.

The refrigerant will carry the heat caught outside, through heat exchangers inside to heat your house. When the refrigerant transfers heat to the inside, it cools, and runs back outside to collect more heat.

This technology is a vapor-compression system and consists of an outdoor unit (ODU) and an indoor unit (IDU). In this project I have focused on the indoor unit.

Do not hesitate to reach out, whether it's big or small, I'll be happy to hear from you!

Currently, I keep my eyes open for opportunities in Brussels and surrounding areas. I recently finished my diploma, and I will be happy to tell you a thing or two about a new heat pump :)
